Buttonwillow was originally founded by Miller and Lux Enterprises when they
established their ranch headquarters here in 1885. The town site was first
laid out in 1895, another town site map developed in 1921, and the present town
site was developed from a map laid out in 1927.

registered landmark 492).
This lone tree, which gave the town of Buttonwillow its
name, served as a landmark on an old trans-valley trail. An ancient Yokuts
Indian meeting place, it later became the site of settlers' stock rodeos.

Cotton is the number one crop in Buttonwillow with an annual value of approximately
$58 million. It's strong agricultural economy is supported by crops such
as cotton, sugar beets, alfalfa, grain, and by the related businesses that

crops as onion, tomatoes, garlic, carrots, kiwis, almond and pistachio trees.
